For the University of Washington’s sesquicentennial in 2011, Studio SC designed an environmental graphics program to enhance the university’s new Alumni Commons and celebrate “Husky Pride.” The program highlights the University’s values—from its community to its philosophies to its surrounding environment.
One of the first graphic components visible upon entering the building is a large-scale halftone image of Mount Rainier, composed of the University’s brand mark W. The placement of this graphic, at the end of a long hallway across from the entrance, recalls the iconic view of the mountain that’s visible from the UW quad.
A People Wall, filled with photographs and quotes of the UW community, is the focal point of the conference room. The wall highlights people’s personal connections with the University and the impact the school has had on their lives. In the common area, a backlit, glowing gold wall features routed typographic statements of the goals and values that have driven the University’s progress over the century and a half.
This new graphics program is an elegant and energetic tribute to the accomplishments of the University of Washington’s past 150 years that also looks proudly toward its future.
