The workshop is divided into three main areas; a 24 hour studio, the laser room and the main workshop floor. For OH&S requirements, the 24 hour studio workshop and laser room were required to maintain a clear line-of-sight across the workshop. It also required a level of seclusion so occupants would not be continually distracted by other activities. As a visual tribute to modern architecture (Herzog & Demeuron), the stretched form was created with a large dot screen running throughout to allow for visibility.

‘We are interested in the surface,” Herzog explains, ”not as pure decoration but for its capacity to have an impact on the space.” With the addition of pattern or, at Dominus, of texture, a building takes on a different character under different conditions, emerging or receding as the light changes, becoming more solid or less substantial.” So that it’s not the geometrical space you give it once and for all as an architect,” Herzog explains.

Despite the wall that has divided fashion and architecture, their progress in our time has been remarkably parallel. ”Clearly, all things in contemporary culture are related,” Herzog says. In clothes and in buildings, transparency has become one of the hallmarks of the 90’s, as fashion designers utilize chiffon, mesh and other sheer materials, and architects turn to glass, screens and scrims. Herzog speculates that in both cases the fascination is the same. ”It is always the curiosity about what lies behind or beyond or beneath the surface,” he says. ”The transparency creates a certain ambiguity, an interplay between the inside and the outside.”
The main workshop floor required a clearly delineated walkway for safety, this feature became the key graphic wayfinding interpretation. The system had to resolve two issues: to find machines by number; and to lead the eye to several displays celebrating the students work. The result pays tribute to modern iconic graphic styling with an engineering influence, featuring bold use of the flooring area.

The environmental graphics had a significant mood uplift as people entered the office which encouraged both improved retention and increased productivity throughout the organization.

Remarkably, PAVE’s new 40,000 sq ft building is the first elementary school to be built in Red Hook in over 50 years, and it will eventually educate a student body of about 400 in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade. The school was developed by Civic Builders, non-profit developers who partner with the New York City Department of Education to build charter schools. Scher previously worked with Civic Builders on graphics for two other schools, Excellence Charter School and Achievement First Endeavor Middle School. Like those schools, PAVE relies on positive messaging to help motivate its students, and Scher and her team have turned these educational phrases into bold supergraphics that are integrated with the architecture, designed by Mitchell/Giurgola Architects.

Students arriving at PAVE are greeted by dimensional signage at the school’s entrance. Wrapped around a corner, the name “PAVE Academy” emerges from the surface of the building in 2 ft deep letterforms. The interior planes of the aluminum letters have been painted yellow to create visual impact.

PAVE’s motto is “Building citizens and scholars brick by brick,” and inside the school various educational slogans have been combined with the architecture to create a dynamic environment for learning. Inexpensive materials like tile and paint are used to maximum effect, with phrases like “Hammer it home,” “Be sharp,” and “Do the right thing” rendered as intricate tile mosaics in the school cafeteria and in painted typographic friezes running along the hallways. The “brick by brick” motto appears as an 7 ft high painted mural that wraps around the walls of the school gymnasium. The typography is set in Benton Sans, to complement the school’s existing identity.

The school’s eye-catching, one-of-a-kind appearance has helped make it a point of pride in the community, and the students and teachers love it.

An amazing team lead by Danny Elphick worked tirelessly on the construction of the café whilst Morag’s team went about creating a beautiful entrance to the Royal Borough of Greenwich, using the words from ‘Shipping Good’, a poem written for the MVMNT by official Olympic poet Lemn Sissay about Greenwich, on a colourful hoarding down the length of Waller Way.

Then Claire Pritchard from the Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency brought along some helpers for the finishing touches and started to get the café in shape for visitors. The GCDA now run the The Movement Café, providing passers by with locally sourced, delicious food and drink including homemade vegan-friendly gelato.

And then we opened. All in time for the first day of the London 2012 Olympics where thousands of people poured off the train at Greenwich to enjoy the greatest show on earth.
